August 2003 Minneapolis, MN
LGBA Conference, August 29-September 1 hosted by the Minnesota Freedom Band.
If you didn't make it to Minneapolis for the LGBA 2003 Conference, then you missed a great weekend. From all the wonderful social opportunities, to the opportunity to play for a very appreciative crowd at the Pride Parade in Superior Wisconsin and a somewhat puzzled crowd at the Minnesota State Fair, to the great workshops and meetings, it was a perfect weekend. Thanks to the MFB folks for their great hospitality and organization.

November 2002 Melbourne/Sydney, Australia
In October and November, LGBA set out on it's longest trip ever. We first landed in Melbourne to a week of meetings, performances, site-seeing. All hosted by the Rainbow Band. We then headed south to Sydney for the Gay Games. There we performed at the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, a special concert at Sydney Town Hall, an numerous events around the city. It was a great time and our musical group really became a family. |
September 13-16, 2001 St. Louis, MO
For those of us fortunate to make it to St. Louis on the weekend of September 13-15th (just days after the New York and Washington, DC tragedies), we spent a weekend together redefining the meaning of friendship, unity and music. Although those things were already a way of life for us, they were made to feel more precious that weekend because of the events on the East Coast. We all fought very hard to get to St. Louis (via bus and rental cars) despite the shutdown of every airport in the country. The moment we came together as a group, the hugs were plentiful and our faith in one another came shining through on stage at the Art Museum Auditorium.
While the conference portion of the weekend events had to be canceled due to a lack of a quorum in both the LGBA Board of Directors and in the Assembly of Delegates, the rest of the activities continued as planned. The weekend included a Diversity Caucus, Sectional Workshops, a roundtable discussion with our attending delegates, the massed band rehearsals and a wonderful concert played to a full house at the Art Museum Auditorium.
The team in St. Louis (BandTogether) made the best of what could have been a very bad situation. They were faced with the harsh reality of the unexpected and unfortunate tragedies and the airline shutdowns, but they held firm to their belief that the "show must go on!" And the show DID go on! And it was FABULOUS!

April 12-14 1996 San Antonio, Texas
The San Antonio conference was unique to LGBA in the sense that we were hosting a conference in a city without the luxury of a host LGBA band. Members of the Houston Pride Band and Dallas' Oak Lawn Band worked together to coordinate the weekend activities for our visiting LGBA members.
With the Holiday Inn-Market Square serving as our host hotel, the weekend began on Friday afternoon with meetings for the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors. A round table discussion allowed delegates the opportunity to share "band updates" with the group. Roger B. was on hand to represent a new band, "The Banned" from Oklahoma City. The board voted unanimously to accept the group as a Full Member Band.
Houston's Artistic Director, Beau C., and guest conductors, Roger B. and Ron H., were on hand to wave their magic batons and produce wonderful music from our group.
After rehearsal, we flocked to a Mexican restaurant called The Fogata where we consumed tons of chips and salsa, delicious Mexican food and buckets of margaritas. The evening was lively and entertaining as we table-hopped from one LGBA table to another to socialize with one another.
After a morning of woodwind, brass and percussion clinics and another full band rehearsal on Saturday, we were off to the Alamo (the historic site, not the car rental place) where we put on two great performances for visiting tourists. A group photo opportunity in front of the Alamo with our huge Lesbian and Gay Bands of America banner prompted security guards to chase us away. "No banners of any kind allowed," they said, but we managed to take a few pictures regardless.
Another night on the town followed. Some enjoyed the beautiful River Walk while others hit the local gay and lesbian club scene, and a few lounged around Ninfa's Mexican Restaurant and Bar in the hotel and enjoyed more margaritas.
On Sunday morning, LGBA members were treated to breakfast while board members attended another meeting. That afternoon, we put on another outdoor performance in the sweltering Texas heat at Market Square just a few blocks from the hotel. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to display our banner at this place, and based on the crowd in attendance, some of us were thankful of that. The crowd did enjoy our music, though, clapping along to tunes like "Oye Como Va" and "Sol y Sombra." The music's Spanish flare and the rattling goat's toes in the percussion section were perfect for the mostly-Hispanic crowd of tourists.
The weekend ended with another large gathering at, well, another Mexican restaurant (Mi Tierra) with another bazillion rounds of margaritas.
The conference was an interesting experience for the Houston Pride Band and Oak Lawn Band hosts, but thankfully our next LGBA venture will have a hometown member band to play host. |
